March 30

Trying to find anything in Boston is a real pain in the ass. It’s a wonder Paul Revere found his way around to tell everyone the British were coming! After 45 minutes of looking we finally find the Somerville Theater where, this evening we are to play with Mr. Sam Bush. It’s a beautiful old vaudeville theater with a few small movie theaters tucked away in various other parts of the building. While waiting for the equipment truck to show I sneak in and catch 15 minutes of The Lord Of The Rings. What a great movie!

The truck shows up and we load in and do a short sound check. Afterward we break and head off to dinner. On the way back I spot a cool looking bookstore (yup, another one). I’m supposed to be back in ten minutes but I can see the theater from the front of the store and I can’t resist a quick look. Well don’t you know in five minutes time I find a biography of the late, great tango master, Astor Piazolla and another of the Louvin Bros. I make it back just in time to change and tune up!

The show starts and the crowd is receptive if a little reserved. That would soon change. By the third song they were cheering solos and at the end of “Head”, half the audience rose to give us a standing ovation. More people stood at the finish. How cool is that? Andy’s brother told us that we had a great review earlier in the week in the Boston Globe. Good job Skip! (Skip's our publicist.) I’d say our trip to Boston was an unmitigated success!

Andy and I decide to skip Sam’s show and head home. On the way we keep each other awake talking about movies. The movies of Stanley Kubrick make up the bulk of the conversation. His first was great (Paths Of Glory) and his last sucked (Eyes Wide Shut). Neither of us has seen Barry Lyndon but I have the soundtrack. And how about Peter Sellars incredible screen debut in Lolita? Andy is well versed on nearly any subject and is a great conversationalist. That’s one of the reasons it’s been a pleasure working with him for 25 years!

I finally get home at 3:30am and drop into bed, happy and exhausted.
